Review #2: Marketside HOT HONEY HUMMUS

In my opinion, all of the best things in the world come in a 10 oz, ready to eat, resealable container–and all of those best things are hummus. While traditionally a die-hard pine nut hummus girl, recently during a Walmart shopping experience I spotted something unusual while my hand went to grasp my usual hummus of choice: a new flavor had come to that magical corner of refrigerated goods. I have no use for garlic hummus, I am fond (but not overly) of roasted red pepper hummus, but now, HOT HONEY HUMMUS–that, I had to try. (This review is not, unfortunately, sponsored by Walmart.)

Hot honey is not a new thing, but it does still feel somewhat like a luxurious item to me. That, combined with the earthy familiarity of all hummuses, made this HOT HONEY HUMMUS quite a treat to experience for the first time. Each flavor in this delightful dip is excellently balanced so that no one flavor overpowers the others. Both the honey and spice levels were exactly right–not so sweet that you feel you’re having some kind of twisted dessert, and not so spicy that you’re crying the whole time.

I tried the HOT HONEY HUMMUS with a variety of dip options so I could determine what combination would make both the carrier and the carried truly shine.

Tortilla chips

A round tortilla chip is my dip item of choice with pine nut hummus. In the case of dipping a tortilla chip in the HOT HONEY HUMMUS, I found that this option was a solid base to uplift the hummus’ distinct flavors. Classic, solid, uncompromising in morals, the tortilla chip will not lead you astray.

Wavy-cut potato chips

A lighter chip option but with similar crunch and salt to the tortilla chip. I never have potato chips with hummus, so I was surprised that I even tried this and how much I liked it. Remember how I think hot honey is kind of opulent? For some reason, the wavy-cut potato chip helped enhance that sensation while trying this hummus.

Carrot

The carrot is so humble, and yet the king of things to dip into hummus. In the case of carrots with HOT HONEY HUMMUS, I felt like the light sweetness of the carrot perfectly complemented that of the hummus. Unmatched!

Fresh-baked sourdough bread

Happened to have some fresh bread and decided to dip it in the hummus. Delightful. Shockingly not my favorite item to dip, because I do like both the bread and the hummus separately. I just felt like the bread and the hummus would be better served with a different pairing.

Very stale multi-grain crackers

Those crackers should have been in the trash, but they weren’t, and they still aren’t. Didn’t love this option.

I also took this hummus to a Christmas work party and asked for a few second opinions from my coworkers. Unfortunately, I did not record their actual words in review of this hummus, but suffice to say they were pleasantly surprised, as was I. Marketside Hot Honey Hummus is a great edition to the hummus canon. Its down-to-earth air combined with lightly lavish flavoring will set it apart as a versatile dip option in years to come.

Thank you for reading another review. In the words of Tiny Tim from A Christmas Carol (which Charles Dickens lightly based off of The Muppet Christmas Carol), “God bless us, every one.”
